Fun With Alphabet Stories

These books proved beyond a doubt that impossible is nothing. Being a nursery schoolteacher, Dheera created crazy creatures for each letter of the alphabet to make the perplexing process of teaching phonetics easier.  Thus, were born Wiggle, the weepy walrus, Callu the cat who is a cooli in Calcutta, Koko the kind Kangaroo who went to kindergarten and so on. Much later, when she thought of converting the characters into a book, Dheera 

made some rough sketches on A4 printer paper, splashed water colour on them and presented the idea to Mr. Anil Gala of Navneet Publications.  He bought it at once, on condition that Dheera would do the illustrations.

Thus began another riveting chapter of her life. The emergence of the artist.  She enrolled the help of an art teacher, who explained patiently and sometimes not so patiently that animals do not behave like humans and that leaves are green, and rocks are brown. Eventually, after many months of total joy for Dheera and unthinkable misery for her teacher, all one hundred and eighty illustrations, including the book cover were ready and the series of six books went under production. These stories are also available at the Talking Library of the National Association for the Blind, in Bombay.
